Flagstone

What Is Flagstone?

Flagstone is a sedimentary rock usually made of sandstone bound together by minerals like silica, calcite, or iron ore. The flat stone is perfect as a paving stone and is often used for walkway, patio, and wall projects. The stone can also be cut and shaped in a variety of ways, allowing for unique patterns.

Flagstone Benefits

Flagstone adds permanence, strength, and durability to a landscape while creating a natural hardscape element that otherwise might include plants. It is a natural product of nature so no two stones are alike in color, shape or size.

Flagstone is perfect for:

  • Walkways
  • Patios
  • Retaining Walls
  • Swimming Pool Areas
  • Steps
  • Outdoor Seating Areas
  • Outdoor Fire Pits

Flagstone FAQs

Here are some of our most popular questions regarding flagstone. If you don't see an answer to your question below, feel free to contact us.

Is flagstone difficult to maintain?

Flagstones are moderately difficult to maintain. The wide joints between the stones collect organic materials, creating a growth environment for weeds. Mortaring between the flagstones controls weeds, though.

Why would I choose flagstone over these other materials if it is more expensive? What are it’s advantages?

The only reason that natural stone is ever chosen is because of the appearance of the stone itself. It is a natural material. It has more character and more individuality than other materials. It creates a more traditional look. There will always be a less expensive, more pragmatic alternative.

What's the difference between "patio" and "select" flagstone?

Patio indicates smaller diameter “stepping stone” type pieces while Select or Stand-Up indicates larger pieces. Select pieces are generally more expensive because they are harder to produce. It’s more difficult to split a large piece of stone without breaking it into smaller pieces.

If I buy a full pallet, what's the chances I find 2 pieces the same?

Flagstone is a natural stone. No two pieces will ever be the same. In a pallet, you might find two similar pieces but they will be different in so many ways.
